Not robust as it's predecessor
The systems seems fine, but it is incredibly fragile. I bought myne 4 months ago and it has problems already. I was playing Rainbow six vegas 2 and whole of a sudden I got a message saying that the dvd was dirty and I should re-start the machine, I did so and ever since no form of CD is recognizerd by the machine, it simply does not read disks anymore. Million dollar question, was it worth the Price?

5 star blu-ray player, 3 star gaming machine
let's get this out of the way: i have an xbox 360 for gaming. the ps3 can't compare in game selection or online play. if you aren't a hard core gamer, or you can do without games like halo or well-implemented online play, then the ps3 is a great combination of a good game machine and outstanding blu-ray player. so i'll give it a 3 for gaming.
but i bought it for blu-ray playback. i was an hd dvd early adopter, and have about 100 titles. i watched the war and thought hd dvd was a better mix of functionality and market feasibility than blu-ray. but when Warner Brothers saw the opportunity to end the format war, they took it, so we have blu-ray. it's a very good format, but the format is only now being finalized with fully functional players. because features have been added since blu-ray's introduction 2 years ago, only the ps3 (since it's basically a PC) has been able to be updated with the new features. the result is a lot of partially obsolete blu-ray standalone players out there, some very expensive full-featured standalones, and the ps3.
but, not only is the ps3 fully functional, it performs very well. i won't go into all the details, but the ps3 is one of the very best blu-ray players out there, and it also converts standard dvd's very, very well. my old dvd player is a denon 3910, which is a fantastic upconverter, and the ps3 is close enough to convince me to sell the denon. for a lot of detailed discussion about the ps3 as a blu-ray player, go to [...] and search through the threads. but bottom line, the ps3 is the ONLY blu-ray player i would buy today, and i don't see a viable competing standalone blu-ray player in 2008, when you factor in price.
in short, the ps3 as a blu-ray player is 5 stars, the ps3 as a game machine is 3 stars. and you won't find a more outstanding value for your money in electronics.

* Great !!!!!!!!! ...
This is hands down the best console. I've used the Wii and the XBOX360 and this thing kicks butt and takes names. It has everything you need and everything you don't and that makes it so much better.

Not a bad system
I own the X-box 360, and I have to admit that the PS3 is comparable. I do still like the Xbox better because it's console is easier to use, and it's great for chatting, and sending message while in game. The PS3 doesn't have this capability, and it's kinda annoying to have to quit a game, and then be able to chat or message someone. However, the built-in blu-ray player is great, and picture quality and sound is great (even though I still HD-DVD was better).
