Item Description:
Samsung DVD-R145 DVD Recorder

:
Standing less than 2.5 inches tall, Samsung's stylishly black DVD-R145 is one of the most powerful entertainment recording and playback devices available today. lt offers the widest assortment of DVD recording compatibility, featuring DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and re-writable DVD-RAM as well as Dual-Layer DVD+/-R--enabling you to store up to 8.5 GB of video on these two-sided discs. Additionally, the DVD-R145 provides a time-slip function when recording onto DVD-RAM discs--enabling you to pause or skip backwards/forwards through a recording that's active.

The DVD-R145 is also an 'upconverting' DVD player, which boosts the standard 48O lines of resolution from a DVD disc up to a high-def 1O8Oi (interlaced) picture. To produce an upconverted picture, your high-def TV must have an HDMl connection (and HDCP support)--the 72Op/1O8Oi choice is only available when using the HDMl cable (which is not included). Also note that the DVD-HD1O8O is not a high-definition DVD player (i.e., not to be confused with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players, which play specially formatted high definition discs), so it will work with your existing DVD library.

A front-panel DV (FireWire lEEE 1394) input enables you to connect the family video camcorder and edit and record footage directly to a DVD disc--all via a single cable and without losing image quality. The EVQ (Enhanced Video Quality) feature provides sharper images and truer color reproduction for both movies and home videos. This unit also offers CM (commercial) advance, enabling you to skip ads from recorded TV programming recorded. 0ther features include CM (commercial) advance, STB (set-top box) control, and DivX playback. ln addition to its ability to play back all current DVD formats, it's also compatible with CD-R/RW discs and MP3 audio and JPEG image files.

You can program recording via the timer, or choose easy one-touch recording (initiating playback at 3O minutes and adding 3O minutes with each additional press of the button, up to the available disc time or 24O minutes, whichever is sooner). Chapters are created when you record your favorite TV show or video clips from a camcorder onto a DVD disc. The chapters are automatically created, which eliminates wasted time searching the whole DVD to find the right spot. Up to 99 titles can be recorded onto one disc. With the simple and easy edit function menu, you can delete, copy, rename, and lock, among other things. You can also create a playlist and edit video in a specific sequence.

lt offers the following connection options:

Tech Talk
HDMl is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMl supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. lt supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Worst electronic product ever purchased
This is the single worst electronic product that l have ever purchased. The unit quickly stopped reading most DVDs and was useless fairly early after purchase. l had good luck with Samsung in the past but will NEVER buy anything from them again.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - *
l bought this unit shortly after it was released. l had the original unit replaced after about 2 weeks because it wasn't playing back some DVD+R's that l had recorded AND finalized from that same recorder. lt was also occasionally having difficulty with some commercial DVD's. lt was necessary to eject and insert a few times to get them to play. The 2nd unit arrived and worked for 3 months and began to exhibit the same problems including scratchy CD playback that was not heard in my other standard DVD player. l called Samsung about replacement and they told me l would have to pay shipping to a repair facility where they may determine it could not be a warranty repair. l decided to tolerate the eject, re-eject issue and after 9 months it wouldn't recognize ANY commercial DVD's and only a few DVD+R's. l called Samsung back and, in short, they put me off over and over until the 1 year warranty had expired. lt is now worthless and l am shopping for another, different manufacturer. l am reasonable but Samsung's customer service was rude and ineffective. l will never buy another of their products. l can't comment about other Samsung models but with this experience, l don't care to. Check reviews on the Web, you'll find that these units have a BAD history.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Look for somthing else
l have owned this DVD-r for less than a year. The remote lacks enough power to even change channels from across the room, let alone make simple selections for my grandson on his Thomas video.

Last month, there was an odd issue with the door of the DVD refusing to open. Then it refused to record after it had been programmed. l thought it was operator error, but now it refuses to acknoledge that a DVD is in the drive.

l have nothing but problems with this DVD-r from day one, and it is now a useless paperweight.

Don't waste your hard earned cash on Samsung's excuse for a DVDr!

by John Steinbeck

Average customer rating: 4.5 ISBN: 0142000663
When The Grapes of Wrath was published in 1939, America, still recovering from the Great Depression, came face to face with itself in a startling, lyrical way. John Steinbeck gathered the country's recent shames and devastations--the Hoovervilles, the desperate, dirty children, the dissolution of kin, the oppressive labor conditions--in the Joad family. Then he set them down on a westward-running road, local dialect and all, for the world to acknowledge. For this marvel of observation and perception, he won the Pulitzer in 1940.

The prize must have come, at least in part, because alongside the poverty and dispossession, Steinbeck chronicled the Joads' refusal, even inability, to let go of their faltering but unmistakable hold on human dignity. Witnessing their degeneration from Oklahoma farmers to a diminished band of migrant workers is nothing short of crushing. The Joads lose family members to death and cowardice as they go, and are challenged by everything from weather to the authorities to the California locals themselves. As Tom Joad puts it: "They're a-workin' away at our spirits. They're a tryin' to make us cringe an' crawl like a whipped bitch. They tryin' to break us. Why, Jesus Christ, Ma, they comes a time when the on'y way a fella can keep his decency is by takin' a sock at a cop. They're workin' on our decency."

The point, though, is that decency remains intact, if somewhat battle-scarred, and this, as much as the depression and the plight of the "Okies," is a part of American history. When the California of their dreams proves to be less than edenic, Ma tells Tom: "You got to have patience. Why, Tom--us people will go on livin' when all them people is gone. Why, Tom, we're the people that live. They ain't gonna wipe us out. Why, we're the people--we go on." It's almost as if she's talking about the very novel she inhabits, for Steinbeck's characters, more than most literary creations, do go on. They continue, now as much as ever, to illuminate and humanize an era for generations of readers who, thankfully, have no experiential point of reference for understanding the depression. The book's final, haunting image of Rose of Sharon--Rosasharn, as they call her--the eldest Joad daughter, forcing the milk intended for her stillborn baby onto a starving stranger, is a lesson on the grandest scale. "'You got to,'" she says, simply. And so do we all. --Melanie Rehak

Norton Confidential safeguards against online identity theft, protecting your confidential information from fraudulent phishing Web sites and crimeware before login, purchase, or any online interaction. Norton Confidential protects you when you’re most vulnerable: at a Web site while banking or shopping online, and about to submit passwords, account numbers, or other confidential information.

Norton Confidential automatically inspects Web sites—and potentially dangerous or identity-stealing programs on your PC—for known threats and suspicious behavior before you log in, make a purchase, or otherwise interact with them. If a threat is detected, Norton Confidential protects your passwords and other confidential information from an attack—such as getting phished by fraudulent Web sites, or having your keystrokes secretly recorded by identity thieves.

When you visit a Web site on the Internet, domain servers translate the domain name into an IP addresses. View larger.

In a pharming scam, a criminal programer hacks into a domain server and sends you to a fake Web site, which could trick you into submitting a username and password. To prevent pharming, Norton Confidential gives you a visual confirmation that a Web page has been verified as belonging to the company represented. View larger.

Anti-Phishing Fraudulent Web Site Protection
Norton Confidential includes an Internet Explorer Toolbar Plug-in that helps you to see Web page risk status at any time. The software filters and blocks phishing Web sites to help ensure you do not inadvertently give personal information to a fraudulent site. Norton Confidential provides a visual categorization for authentic sites, good sites, suspicious sites, and bad sites, making it easy for you to know status as you shop and browse online.

Anti-Pharming Protection
In addition to blocking fraudulent or suspicious sites, Norton Confidential authenticates top banking and shopping transaction sites to provide a global multi-layer shielding protection. You'll get a visual confirmation that a Web page has been verified by Symantec as belonging to the company represented—or in simple terms, the site is really who it says it is.

Signature and Behavioral Crimeware Blocking
Norton Confidential protects users from hidden crimeware designed to steal confidential or personally identifying information. While detecting and removing known threats, there is minimal disruption for the user—Norton Confidential works in the background. Norton Confidential is designed to coexist with Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security in addition to competitive antivirus and Internet security solutions. Even if you already use one layer of computer protection, Norton Confidential adds another layer of protection, specifically for online threats with financial damage potential.

InfoVault Login and Password Protection
Norton Confidential automatically detects, stores and protects your logins and passwords. You can then use one "master" password instead of countless individual Web site logins; individual passwords and protected by the master password. Norton Confidential prevents users from inadvertently sending password and login information to unauthorized sites, and provides convenient way to migrate stored passwords from Norton Password Manager.

A Real-time Integrated Solution
Norton Confidential is one of the only fully integrated solution that protects against both phishing and crimeware at the point of transaction. Most solutions provide protection against one vector requiring users to "piece together" their safety status and/or are not "transaction sensitive".

Intelligent Prevention
Norton Confidential uses advanced heuristics to provide zero-hour protection from online identity theft without requiring known phishing URLs or crimeware definitions. Other solutions rely heavily on signatures, which are insufficient for protection from quickly evolving threats.

Effortless Protection
Norton Confidential is the only solution that allows you to complete their transactions uninterrupted by offering behavior blocking technology that prevents suspicious applications from capturing sensitive information.

For Your Eyes Only
Password protection prevents you from accidentally submitting your passwords to unauthorized sites—providing a failsafe against emerging phishing attacks.

Symantec Response Expertise
Norton Confidential is the only consumer security solution that authenticates secure Web sites and does so without requiring the Web sites to make any changes to their sites. Symantec Response team on-going Web site profiling delivers in-depth protection for popular banking, shopping and eCommerce sites.
