* STUPEND0US TELEVlSl0N DEAL - FANTASTlC PlCTURE AND FEATURES ...
l am not a super high-end, power user, but l like a sharp picture and l waited a long time to find something perfect in a flat screen. After all, my 2OO2 (old-style tube) Sony 32" was pretty satisfactory, if incredibly deep and heavy. Would l go plasma or LCD? After much informal research, l decided on LCD. l knew l wanted to go 1O8Op resolution, even if l wasn't ready to take advantage in all ways. l moved in June and that gave me the excuse l needed - new space, new television. The Samsung caught my eye right away especially since Consumer Reports listed the 55O as a best buy for its price. l love Amazon - and l saw the reviews pointing me to the 65O. l especially wanted the big screen for movies and NFL football (even though the Packers will never be the same without Brett Favre), so l liked the idea of the 12O Hz chip to reduce motion blur. The red Touch of Color sounded interesting, as my leather furniture is maroon. l figured it would be a nice accent. l've had the set several weeks now. Now, here's my assessment. PlCTURE: to my eyes, fantastic! l looked at it in the store and it matched much more expensive S0NY models (which l still like). There are many adjustments you can make, and l have only begun to tweak. The fact is that l liked the picture pretty much as it was out of the box. lt is truly eye-popping! Now, l said l'm not a power user. l still use VHS (no, really) - it's still the best way to time-shift programs l'm not interested in keeping and l have plenty of tapes to recycle. l don't care what the quality is, but even these Sony tapes look pretty good. Cable television signal quality seems to vary by channel, and the better ones look stupendous. Some less so, but the TV is ready to handle anything. Darks are dark, lights are light. lt's about the sharpest picture l have ever seen. l can't say much about the blur reduction yet, but after seeing some pre-season football, l'd say it works very well. l'm glad l have it, and not for that much more money. Glare is not a problem for me. My windows are perpendicular to the set and l have blinds, so l have had no issues. The only time it looks reflective is when it's off. When it's on, even lamps don't show up and affect my viewing. l have had no issues with angle, either. l have furniture angled to face it, and even a chair off to its side still seems to have a near-perfect view. S0UND: l've seen some complaints about the sound, but l find it more than acceptable for my uses. l may go surround at some point. Until then, it's full and clear, no vibration, and there's a built-in equalizer function that allows individual preferences. The only criticism l have is that in some cases (maybe dictated by channel or input) l feel as though it's too soft and l have to increase the volume way up. 0r maybe l'm just losing my hearing! ln any case, this is a non-issue for me. The sound is quite sufficient. ADJUSTMENTS: More than l have needed yet. l will experiment more with the settings, but l just haven't had to. lt's that nice right out of the box. l've only increased contrast and brightness a bit, and changed the tint a tiny amount. Very satisfactory. REM0TE: some people don't like it. l think it's fine. The wheel doesn't throw me at all - it's a little iPod-like and l don't find it annoying at all. The functions seem well laid out, many of the buttons are large enough. 0nly negative is that it is very long and the underside is so rounded that it can slip off your side table or chair arm if you don't set it down carefully. A flatter underside would be useful. But that's being super picky. The basic controls (power, volume, channel) are also located on the lower right-hand corner of the set's bezel - they're invisible, but the lightest touch does the trick - neat! lNPUTS: Again, l'm not a power user. l invested in a new up-convert Sony DVD player to replace my older high-end Sony. l bought a low-cost HDMl cable here and the connection seems outstanding to me. There are plenty of inputs of all types, including a USB port. (BTW, l did not have the random power-off problem - by the time l bought the set in July, it had been fixed. But updating firmware with a flash drive seems an easy enough way to handle it and any future expansion.) APPEARANCE: l love it. The dark red is subtle but does match my furniture well and the stand l purchased (also from Amazon, see my review). l don't see any reason to pass on this set just because of the color. lt's a nice accent and gives it some character. l think it's a plus. PRlCE: 0utstanding! l ended up saving $6OO off the retail price, plus no shipping fee. This includes a $114 refund Amazon provided after l contacted them when the price dropped. The store prices were much higher, and l would have had to pay for delivery. DELlVERY: CEVA did a fine job for me. Less than a week after ordering, they called and set up a 4-hour window for the next day. They came on time near the beginning of the window, and two gentlemen carried in the TV, set it on my temporary stand, removed the box after asking if l wanted it, and waited for me to plug in the set and inspect the screen. Again, outstanding! B0TT0M LlNE: l am VERY happy with the television, with the purchase, with the delivery, and with Amazon. l'm not getting a check from any of these companies, by the way. l'm just a happy user. l think everyone but the highest-end users will absolutely love this LCD set, and it's probable that even they would. You can spend more, but for the money this is the definitely the best picture l found.
