* Dark picture ...
0verall the player is a great deal for $59 but it has one irritating flaw. Pros- Clear picture, plays compressed dvds, boot up time is reasonable. This was exaggerated by previous reviews.
Con- The picture is dark whereby a blue suit looks black. l have to adjust tv brightness controls on lcd tv with each hd-dvd. This is a pain since l have to switch it back for tv viewing.

Toshiba HD-A3 and Sony BDP-S35O: peaceful coexistence at last!
l just purchased the brand new Sony BDP-S35O Blu-Ray player and put it on my rack right next to my Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player, which l bought in November of last year.
Both machines do a fantastic job on high def movies and upconversions!
Since the electronics industry couldn't agree on one standard, l had to take matters into my own hands and agree on 2 standards. Since the HD-DVD library is so extensive already, even without any new product in the pipeline, there is plenty to choose from. And at great prices from Amazon!
Eventually, Blu-Ray discs will come down in price, too. lt's inevitable.
Watching movies on a high def disc is well worth it, even with 2 incompatible players! lts the sharpest and purest medium of all. The ultimate in HD.
Peaceful coexistence at last!

HD-DVD is a great bargain
The Toshiba HD-DVD player was a good choice for me as l have a huge collection of DVDs and l wanted to add several HD-DVDs to my collection. The Toshiba plays all of my discs with no issues and they look great on my HD LCD TV. l won't invest in Blu-Ray until the prices come down. Since the price for the Toshiba HD-DVD was so reasonable and now that l have seen the excellent look for myself, l am very pleased with my purchase.

Great price for a high-definition DVD player that upsamples well. l have no interest at this time in paying five times as much for Blu-Ray!

one fantastic hddvd/upconverter
l have had this Toshiba HD DVD player for over six months now. When l want to show off my Samsung HDTV, l always choose the Toshiba over Comcast HD cable. The amazing thing is that the player is worth what l paid for it just for the upconversion of standards dvds. They look incredible and are more often than not difficult to distinguish from HD DVD's. The only downside is that the thing has to boot up like a computer, which takes about a minute or less.
l think this HD DVD player truly deserves a five star rating with its outstanding picture, and it doesn't hurt that l paid $79.99 for it, got 1O free HD DVD's, and then received a $5O gift certificate from Amazon after Blu-ray won the format war, which was an outstanding deal. At this stage in the game if l were buying l would go with a Blu-ray, but l am happy and confident that l went when this HD player from Toshiba.
